Administrative Intern

Duties and responsibilities:
The Administrative Intern will have the opportunity to gain experience in many areas of arts management.  Specific duties include, but are not limited to managing the gift shop at concerts in the main EMF concert hall, running the student bank, assisting with the box office, and general clerical and administrative duties.  The position supports both the Finance Director and the Development/Marketing Associate and may be assigned duties by other key Festival staff . The Administrative Intern will maintain a rigorous and challenging work schedule.

Interns are encouraged to attend a wide variety of concerts, education programs, fundraising events, staff meetings, etc. to gain a thorough understanding of all aspects of the artistic and administrative activities of the festival. All interns will be assigned to projects outside of their job description. Hours outside of the normal 40-hour work week should be expected.

Requirements:
The successful candidate should demonstrate strong communication skills, a strong background in mathematics, and an attention to detail. Applicants should have a professional demeanor and be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment. Strong computer skills needed (includes Microsoft Outlook, Word & Excel; familiarity with Microsoft Access is helpful.)  Applicants should have their own means of transportation while at the Festival.  Applicants must be 21 years or older.  The dates for this internship are June 23 through August 5, 2008.

Collaborative Pianist

Duties and responsibilities:
This pianist will accompany EMF student instrumentalists in an extensive series of masterclasses and accompany students in the final round of the concerto competition. This position involves learning music quickly and being flexible with rehearsals in order to accommodate students' schedules. The Collaborative Pianist also teaches secondary instrument lessons to EMF students.  He/she will be expected to perform at a high level. Other duties may be assigned by key Festival staff.

Requirements:
Applicants should have extensive experience in instrumental accompanying and be outstanding sight-readers and excellent musicians. The successful candidate should be reliable and comfortable working with students ages 14-20.  Applicants must be at least 21 years of age. The dates for this position are June 28 through August 2, 2008.

Compensation:
$1250 base pay (negotiable depending on experience), Room and board

Counselor

Duties and responsibilities:
The primary responsibility of a counselor at the Eastern Music Festival is to ensure the physical and mental well-being of students and contribute to a positive learning environment by implementing established policies, addressing student concerns, resolving conflicts, and providing other supervisory services.

Duties include the following: coordinate social events for students, assist the Dean of Students as needed, maintain an orderly environment, provide help and guidance to students, respond to emergencies, staff the counseling office, monitor and report negative student behavior, hold student meetings, and more. Counselors will live in the dormitories with the students and will have private rooms. Although counselors work in shifts, they are “on-call” for emergency situations 24/7.  Other duties may be assigned by key Festival staff.

Counselors have the opportunity to be a part of a rich, musical atmosphere where they may attend a wide variety of concerts, masterclasses, rehearsals, etc. Counselors may also make arrangements to study privately with EMF faculty (at the counselor’s expense). 

Requirements:
Counselors must be at least 21 years of age and have a valid driver’s license. Applicants should have strong communication skills, leadership skills, and work well with other people. Applicants should be outgoing and comfortable working with students ages 14-20. The dates for this internship are June 23 through August 4, 2008.

Festival Orchestra Percussion Intern

Duties and Responsibilities:
EMF Orchestra Interns have the unique opportunity to perform with the Eastern Festival Orchestra (EFO), the professional faculty orchestra in residence at the Eastern Music Festival. Along with performances with the EFO, this fellow will further his/her orchestral experience through performances with the two student orchestras and the percussion ensemble as needed. This intern is responsible for the management and inventory of percussion equipment, including set-up and take-down of equipment for concerts and rehearsals. Additional duties may be assigned by the percussion faculty as well as stage crew duties as assigned by the Technical Director. All interns will be assigned to projects outside of their job description.

Performance Interns are encouraged to attend a wide variety of concerts, education programs, fundraising events, staff meetings, etc. to gain a thorough understanding of all aspects of the artistic and administrative activities of the festival.

Requirements:
Applicants should be percussionists at least 21 years of age. Applicants should be patient and meticulous in their work. Strong communication skills are a must. The dates for this position are June 23 through August 5, 2008.

Compensation:
$1000, Room and board

Audition Tape requirements:
One solo must be prepared for each of the following three instruments: timpani, snare drum, and mallet percussion. Etudes may be used for solo selections; orchestral excerpts may be used, but should demonstrate all of the typical qualities found in etudes or solo repertoire.
Percussion applicants must provide copies of all music prepared (these copies will be destroyed after the audition is evaluated).

Festival Orchestra 2nd Violin/Music Library Intern

Duties and Responsibilities:
EMF Orchestra Interns have the unique opportunity to perform with the Eastern Festival Orchestra, the professional faculty orchestra in residence at the Eastern Music Festival, study privately with a faculty member, and learn about the music library of a professional orchestra. The Music Library interns will assist the Music Librarian for the Eastern Music Festival. The Music Library provides music for three orchestras as well as chamber music ensembles. The duties of this internship include distribution and collection of music, inventory, and other music library duties as assigned by the Music Librarian.  Other responsibilities include the provision of bowings, rehearsal markings, etc. as indicated by the principals and the Music Librarian, and assistance in any end-of-season music library matters.

Interns are encouraged to attend a wide variety of concerts, education programs, fundraising events, staff meetings, etc. to gain a thorough understanding of all aspects of the artistic and administrative activities of the festival. EMF Kids Camp Intern

Duties and Responsibilities:
The EMF Kids Camp Intern will assist the Camp Instructors by:
            - applying teaching techniques for children ages 4-8
            - being involved in creating daily activities
            - aiding in general supervision
            - teaching children how to play various instruments
            - introducing children to basic rhythm and melody

Requirements:
Applicants should be at least 18 years old and have experience with children ranging from the ages of 4 through 8.  We are most interested in an intern who is organized, creative and helpful.  Knowledge of classical music or the performing arts is preferred, but not required.  Applicants should have their own means of transportation while at the festival.  The dates for this internship are July 7 through July 18, from 8:30am to 12:30pm.

Fringe Series Intern  (EMF’s non-classical concert series)

Duties and responsibilities:
The Fringe Series Intern will have the opportunity to learn and apply the skills necessary to produce a summer music festival. This intern will assist in all areas of production including coordinating performance contracts between road managers and artist representatives, coordinating live sound and special instrument (e.g. “backline”) rentals and setup, communicating all production intentions and facilities requirements with performance venues, managing Front of House at concert venues, assisting with travel details and hotel reservations and assisting with coordinating rehearsal schedules, concert needs, and special requests of artists.  The Fringe Series Intern will maintain a rigorous work schedule.

Operations Intern

Duties and responsibilities:
The Operations Intern will have the opportunity to learn and apply the skills necessary to produce a summer music festival.  This intern will support the activities of the Director of Operations in overseeing day-to-day operation of the Festival.  Specific areas of responsibility include but are not limited to the creation and dissemination of daily communication between faculty, students, and technical crew; managing logistics for student community concerts; coordination of rental and special instrument needs; assisting with facilities-related issues and housing logistics; and serving as on-duty staff in the Operations Office.  The Operations Intern will maintain a rigorous work schedule, and will frequently perform duties outside of normal “business hours”.

Interns are encouraged to attend a wide variety of concerts, education programs, fundraising events, staff meetings, etc. to gain a thorough understanding of all aspects of the artistic and administrative activities of the festival.  All interns will be assigned to projects outside of their job description.  Hours outside of the normal 40-hour work week should be expected.

Applicants should have a hard-working, “can-do” attitude, strong interpersonal communication skills, and exhibit a high capacity for problem-solving and leadership.  Applicants should be friendly, detailed-oriented and able to work well under pressure in a face-paced environment.  Applicants should have their own means of transportation while at the festival, but will not be required to use personal vehicles for Festival business.  Candidates must be 21 years or older.  Dates for this internship are June 23 through August 5, 2008.

Piano Technician Intern

Duties and responsibilities:
The Piano Technician Intern will have the opportunity to gain experience in his/her field through a variety of duties and learning activities.  The intern will work closely with and be coached by EMF’s Head Piano Technician at the EMF facilities and spend approx. 10 hours/week in a renowned piano restoration shop. 

EMF is sponsored by Steinway and Sons and hosts over 30 pianos, including 4 concert grands and 20 smaller grands.  Duties depend on the experience of the candidate.  The majority of the intern’s time will be spent at the EMF facilities.  Responsibilities include practice piano tunings, shadowing the Head Technician for concert tunings, learning to diagnose and correct minor problems associated with new pianos, observing and experiencing collaboration with guest pianists and faculty pianists, and potentially tuning recital pianos.  The Piano Technician Intern will maintain a rigorous and challenging work schedule.

Interns may be asked to staff a minimal amount of concerts throughout the summer and assist in some logistical aspects of the piano program, including student transportation.  Interns are encouraged to attend a wide variety of Eastern Music Festival concerts, education programs, staff meetings, etc. to gain a thorough understanding of all aspects of the artistic and administrative activities of the festival. 

The time spent with John Foy Piano Restorations, Inc. will include observation of structural rebuilding procedures, along with hands-on training in grand piano action regulation and voicing.  Touchweight theory and practice will be discussed, and the student will have the opportunity to observe the rebalancing of a grand action and keyboard.  Aural tuning skills will be reviewed and the student will be allowed to tune one or more pianos with detailed critique from John Foy.  Additional topics that will be discussed will include:  business practices for the home-service market, safety and health issues, and assessing pianos for rebuilding.

Hours outside of the normal 40-hour work week should be expected for this position.

Requirements:
The successful candidate must hold a certificate in piano tuning and be interested in or have experience in piano restoration.  Applicants should be out-going, personable, and enthusiastic. The dates for this internship are June 25 through August 4, 2008.

Photography Intern

Duties and Responsibilities:
The photography intern will visually document the 2008 Festival through still photography and work part-time with a professional photographer. Photography will include candid shots and coordinated photo shoots of Festival rehearsals, performances and daily life of guest artists, faculty, students and staff.  The professional photographer will oversee the EMF project.  This shall be considered as a work for hire agreement.  The intern may use the work for future portfolio use, but EMF will own the rights to the photography.  All interns will be assigned to projects outside of their job description.

Requirements:
Applicants should be enrolled in or have obtained training in photography. Applicants are responsible for providing the necessary equipment.  All equipment should be at least of an entry-level professional grade.  Applicants should have knowledge of working with raw image files and Photoshop and his/her computer should be capable of supporting a long-term photo project.  The successful candidate will have the ability to work independently and have a good report with students, staff, and faculty.  Applicants should have their own means of transportation while at the festival.   The dates for this internship are June 27 through August 5, 2008.

Public Relations/ Marketing Intern

Duties and responsibilities:
The public relations and marketing intern will apply basic public relations techniques and communication skills to promote the Eastern Music Festival during its summer season.
The PR/Marketing Intern will be involved in the preparation of press releases, the coordination of media coverage for the festival’s events, interaction with publicity representatives, public service announcements, internet coverage, mass email communication, media calls, print advertising, the distribution of collateral materials, and more.

Stage Assistant Intern

Duties and responsibilities:
The stage assistant intern will have the opportunity to gain experience in the stage management of a professional concert series. This intern will assist the Stage Manager in all areas of festival production, including all in-town and out-of-town concerts, music rehearsals, and master-classes. This intern will also assist in the transportation of production materials including percussion equipment. Other responsibilities include all Back-of-House duties as directed by the Stage Manager, such as stage equipment set-up and changes for concerts and recitals.

All interns will be assigned to projects outside of their job description. Part-time and full-time positions available.  Hours outside of the normal 40-hour work week should be expected.

Requirements:
Applicants must be able to work under tight deadlines and be able to take directions from many people. This job may require driving large vehicles as well as lifting heavy equipment. Previous stage managing experience is desirable. Applicants should have their own means of transportation while at the festival. The dates for this internship are June 23 through August 5, 2008.

Front of House Intern

Duties and responsibilities:
The Front of House Intern will have the opportunity to learn and apply the skills necessary to be a House Manager of a summer festival. In addition, this intern will assist in the day-to-day operations of the student program.  Areas of responsibility include, but are not limited to assisting the Front of House Manager in usher crew assignments and managing concerts, recitals, and open rehearsals.  The Front of House Intern will also assist the Admissions Director and Director of Educational Programs in all areas of student relations such as coordination of student events and educational programs for young children and adults, data entry and clerical duties, and managing student work study assignments.   

Interns are encouraged to attend a wide variety of concerts, education programs, fundraising events, staff meetings, etc. to gain a thorough understanding of all aspects of the artistic and administrative activities of the festival. All interns will be assigned to projects outside of their job description. Hours outside of the normal 40-hour work week should be expected. The Front of House Intern will maintain a rigorous work schedule.

Requirements:
Applicants should have excellent leadership and interpersonal skills, experience managing groups of people (specifically high school aged students) and experience in customer service.  Applicants should possess organizational and time management skills, the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, and have an outstanding attention to detail.  Strong computer skills needed (includes Microsoft Access, Word and Excel as well as Internet and email proficiency).  Knowledge in classical music is a plus but not required.  Candidates must be 21 years or older.

Artist Liaison

Duties and responsibilities:
The Artist Liaison Intern will work with the Director of Operations to serve as a liaison between guest artists and Festival staff, faculty, and students, and coordinate all transportation needs for Festival artists and activities.  Specific areas of responsibility include but are not limited to the organization of all Festival transportation, the maintenance of expenses and schedules for artist housing, providing transportation for guest artists, and the assistance in the coordination of all guest artist itineraries.  The Artist Liaison Intern will maintain a rigorous work schedule, and will frequently perform duties outside of normal “business hours”.

Executive Assistant Intern

The Executive Assistant Intern will have the opportunity to gain experience in many areas of arts management.  Specific duties include, but are not limited to maintaining development records, assisting with the planning and execution of special events from small concerts to private parties, board correspondence, and general clerical and administrative duties.  The position supports both the Executive Director and the Marketing/Development Associate and may be assigned duties by other key Festival staff (such as assistance in concert production like handling will call tickets at the box office).
