Financial Assistance

Financial assistance for study at the School of the Eastern Music Festival is available, but consideration for assistance is given only after the application and audition process are completed by the applicant. Merit scholarships are available based on audition (live or recorded). Work/study grants are available based on financial need. Awards range from $100 to the full cost of tuition, room, board, and travel.

Applicants wishing to be considered for financial aid must submit a completed Application for Financial Assistance with their Application for Admission and application fee. A copy of the most recent Federal Tax Form 1040 of the applicant’s parent (or of the applicant, if independent) must accompany the Application for Financial Assistance. Information provided on these forms will be kept confidential and destroyed once the financial assistance process has been completed.  Please note: An application which is not completely filled out, or which is missing Form 1040, will result in a delay in consideration for financial assistance.

The School makes every effort to award scholarships appropriate to each student's need and merit, but our financial assistance is limited. Applicants are expected to explore additional sources of funding in their own communities through various organizations, corporations, foundations, and businesses. Payment of all other applicable fees is required of every student, regardless of financial award.

NOTE: Applications for financial assistance are reviewed each year, for that year only. Returning students requesting a review of financial assistance must submit a new Application for Financial Assistance and the Tax Form 1040 each year they apply.

Merit Scholarships
Merit scholarships are awarded based on the applicant’s audition (live or recorded) and their demonstrated level of playing, in relation to the overall applicant pool. These awards are intended as an acknowledgement of merit on the part of the applicant, and for the most part are limited in size.

Work/Study Grants and Assistantships
Work-study grants and assistantships are awarded on the basis of financial need. They are intended to bridge the gap between the cost of EMF and the financial resources available to the applicant. Work/study grants typically require three to five hours of work per week. Work/study assistantships require ten to twelve hours of work per week. Work/study assignments are in areas of Festival operations such as stage management, music library, ushering, and office work. Student preferences are considered in making assignments.

Full Scholarships
A limited number of full scholarships are open to qualified applicants as available. For example, the Joseph M. Bryan, Jr. Merit Scholarships are open to qualified string players who are currently enrolled in a college, university or conservatory in the United States. Other full scholarships are available for wind, brass, percussion and piano students on a limited basis.

Course offerings, faculty, visiting artists, fees and other information contained in this catalog are subject to change without notice.

Eastern Music Festival is actively committed to a diverse student body and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, creed, national or ethnic origin, sex or physical disability, in the administration of its educational policies and programs.

A Financial Assitance form is included within the application form downloadable here.
